No such thing as too dark. You can have a black army (Black Templars, Ulthwe) and still get a good amount of pop.
The trick is going to be how you accent and highlight the models. If you don't incorporate a good bit of secondary detailing, it will be easy to think that they're not much beyond bare plastic.

I started painting a sky claw like this and it doesn't look as dark as I feared it would.
